THE HORNBLOWER LUCKY WOODEN PENNY.

"As we and those we love, travel along this path of life

sometimes troubles come along, and bring us pain or strife.

When they do just trust in God, his powers they are many,

and good times will return to you, through your lucky wooden penny".

This is brought to you by George.Pickles - (After 1100 years of tradition, the last person to singularly hold the official post of The Ripon City Hornblower 2004 to 2015.

When I took on the role of the Ripon City Hornblower in 2004 I decided I should have some small token of appreciation to give to those who traveled from all over the UK and from abroad to see the evening ancient ceremony of 'Setting the Watch'. After a great deal of thought I designed The Hornbower Lucky Wooden Penny. These would be based on the USA 'Wooden Nickel",(Considered by some to be lucky) and would be made of the same kind of wood and have the blessing of the Wakeman. In negotiation with the  manufacturers of the  Wooden Nickel in the USA, I submitted my design with an initial order for the first batch of 1000.. Little did I realise at the time just how popular and successful these modest wooden tokens would become and what positive effect they would have on so many peoples lives.

Since 2004 many, many thousands of these have been given out and are carried in the pockets, purses and hand bags of people all over the world . The stories of good fortune in terms of health, wealth, happiness, romance, business success, and the bringing forth of new friendships reach me on a very regular basis. People going for job interviews, students sitting exams, those going into hospital, people setting off on long ventures, those getting married, or those who have just fallen on hard times, are among so many who just feel a little comfort, having with them the blessing of the Hornblower Lucky Wooden Penny.

The Hornblower Lucky Wooden Penny project including the financing, design, production, and distribution is, and always has been, my own personal initiative and not that any Council, group or association

When I retired from the position of Ripon City Hornblower after almost 12 years of very enjoyable service in the role, it was decided that the role and duties of the Hornblower would  be carried out on a daily rota basis by a team of a minimum of four Deputies as a job share project. I wish them every success as a team.

IN VIEW OF THE  ONGOING  AND VERY REGULAR REQUESTS I RECEIVE FOR THE PENNIES, I HAVE DECIDED TO CARRY ON THE CUSTOM OF ISSUING THEM, AND AS THIS IS MY OWN PERSONAL PROJECT I WANT TO CONTINUE BRINGING GOOD LUCK AND SENDING GOOD WISHES TO THE NICE PEOPLE OF THIS WORLD.

If you were given a Lucky Wooden Penny and you have never been to Ripon and as a result you are persuaded to visit the City, please tell us if your journey was worthwhile, and any comments you may have.
